Why Paint Correction Matters Before Ceramic Coating
The most expensive mistake you can make with a ceramic coating is applying it over paint that hasn't been properly prepared. Ceramic Pro 9H bonds permanently with the clear coat — and that means it permanently locks in whatever condition the paint is in when the coating goes on. If there are swirl marks before the coating, there will be swirl marks under the coating for the next 3–5 years.
What Paint Correction Actually Removes
Paint correction is the process of machine polishing the clear coat to remove surface defects. The most common are swirl marks — circular scratches caused by automated car washes, poor washing technique, or drying with rough materials. Other correctable defects include light surface scratches, water spot etching, bird dropping stains, oxidation, and buffer trails left by poorly executed previous machine polishing.
On a typical used car in Manchester — driven regularly, washed at automated car washes, and parked outside — we typically find 60–85% of the paint surface covered in visible swirl marks under a 1000-watt inspection light. These are largely invisible in normal daylight conditions, but crystal clear under showroom lighting or direct sun.
The Stages of Paint Correction
A single-stage polish (Bronze package) uses one compound and one pad to remove the most obvious defects and enhance gloss. It typically removes 50–70% of visible surface defects. For a car with heavy swirl marks or deeper scratches, a multi-stage correction (Silver or Gold) uses progressively finer compounds and pads over multiple passes to achieve 80–95% defect correction. We measure paint depth before and after correction to ensure we're working safely within the clear coat.
Why Skipping Correction Is a Mistake
Some installers offer "ceramic coating with a wash included" — no polishing, no correction, just a coating applied over unwashed or roughly washed paint. This seals the paint in whatever condition it's in. You've now paid for a multi-year coating over paint that still looks average.
At Ceramic Pro Manchester, every coating package includes at minimum a single-stage polish. Our Gold package includes full multi-stage correction as standard — because there is no point applying a world-class coating over preparation that isn't. Learn more about our paint correction service.
