Window tint laws in the UK are stricter than most drivers realise — and the consequences of non-compliance are more serious than a fine. Here's everything Manchester drivers need to know about legal tint limits in 2025, how they're enforced, and how to get the privacy and heat rejection you want while staying fully road-legal.

UK Window Tint Legal Limits — The Rules

WindowMinimum VLTNotes
Front windscreen75% VLTFactory windscreen tint counts toward this
Front side windows70% VLTDriver and front passenger windows
Rear side windowsNo minimumAny darkness level permitted
Rear windscreenNo minimumAny darkness level permitted

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission — the percentage of light that passes through the glass. A higher number means a lighter tint; a lower number means a darker tint. Clear glass is typically 90%+ VLT. A 70% VLT front side window tint is relatively light in appearance — you can still see clearly into the cabin.

An Important Detail: Factory Glass Already Has Tint

Most modern vehicles already have some tint built into the glass at the factory — typically 70–80% VLT on front side windows. If your factory glass is already at 75% VLT and you add a 70% VLT tint film, the combined result is approximately 52% VLT — well below the legal limit. This is why it's essential to have front windows measured by a professional before film is applied.

At Ceramic Pro Manchester, we measure the existing VLT of your front windows before recommending any tint grade. We will only install film that keeps you within the legal limit — and we explain this clearly before any work begins.

Consequences of Illegal Tint

Police can issue a Vehicle Defect Rectification Notice (VDRN) requiring you to remove illegal tint within a set period. More seriously, illegal tint may void your insurance — meaning you're driving uninsured — and can result in an MOT failure. If you're involved in an accident with illegal tint, you may face additional liability.

The rear windows are a completely different story — there is no legal VLT minimum on rear side windows or the rear windscreen. If you want maximum privacy and heat rejection at the rear, you can have very dark film applied without any legal concern. Contact us to discuss your vehicle and what's possible.
